PAST CONTINUOUS: WHEN TO USE?

1.      Past action that was in progress
               i.e. I was sleeping at 8pm yesterday night.
 
2.      Two past actions that were in progress in the same time
               i.e. While Jimmy was watching TV, I was doing my homework.
